Fancy the Rainbow Cake

I have been so so slack with the blog ): have not even finish updating with my Taiwan trip yet and I still have things to update on my Hong Kong Trip. Oh well, I'll keep working on that one slowly before I start on the Hong Kong trip. Alongside that, there seems to be a hype about rainbow cake.

This is the story. One fine evening, my boy searched up this dessert place in Singapore which serves very pretty rainbow cake. However, we got disappointed because the rainbow cake was sold out ): . Looking at the sad boy's face. I had decided to try making my own rainbow cake using this recipe

After actually tried making it, I think rainbow cake is the easiest cake to make on earth now :D !

Tips: for the colouring, you only need 3 colours red, blue and yellow. Yes. I attended some art class N years ago and I know, red + blue = purple, red + yellow = orange and blue + yellow = green. That made up 6 colours. Apparently you can add another additional layer with baby pink. But aint no body got time for the extra layer! Maybe when I have no anime to watch, no game to complete, no DotA matches to catch up, no housework to do. Maybe.

Tada! The icing is abit messing but who cares. It still looks great hahaha.

Oh, forgot to mention, the cream cheese frosting on the recipe. I don't think that quantity is enough to cover the whole cake. At least I ran out of it half way and it became like the picture above ):

The boy was very happy with it and it tastes good too! It only took me about 2 -3 hours to finish everything.

Day 6, Ximending

Day 6 - Friday 13th December 2013

Finally heading to Ximending on the sixth day!
Shops in Ximending open generally pretty late and close pretty late as well, 11am - 10.30pm on weekdays and till 11pm on weekends. It usually get liven up from the evening. So if you want to avoid the crowd and have some leisure time shopping around Ximending, noon will be a good time. Then again, most of the street food stalls only start operating during the evening through to late night.

We practically spent the whole day in Ximending hunting down food and shop around.
Take the blue line MRT and stop at Ximen Station. Exit through Exit 1 to get to Xi Men Red House or Exit 6 to the shopping district.

We paid a short visit to the Red House

The Red House

It was wet and we were very hungry. So, we only stayed for a short while, I personally think there's nothing to see ._. .

First stop: Lunch at Niu Dian (牛店)

Bull painting in the shop

Address: 91 Kunming street, Taipei (near ximending)

We had a hard time finding this shop, cause our GPS was screwing it up. Nevertheless, we never gave up and we found it. Oh, my love for food!

Normal Beef Soup Noodle

Braised Beef Soup Noodle

We ordered the plain original beef noodles, and special braised beef noodles. The waitress explained to us how to enjoy my braised beef noodles on arrival. Personally I think one of the special braised beef noodles is enough for the 2 of us. The braised beef noodles came with a bowl of plain beef soup noodles on the side. You can add the braised sauce into the soup according to your liking. So you can actually have a taste of 2 different beef soup noodles in one dish ;) .

Beef soup noodles were nice and tasty, very light soup base.

Happy girl and boy after lunch, we headed towards the main shopping district of Ximending.

 Ximending district

We spent all day wondering around ximending, looking around, surveying prices and hunting down for more food. The boy bought a Porter sling bag and I bought a pair of Timberland boots ;)

Ah Zhong Mian Xian (Rice Flour noodles with Pork Intestine); Hot Star Deep Fried Chicken Chop/Chicken Schnitzel

IMO, the Ah Liang Mian Xian (rice noodles) in Shilin night market tasted better compared to Ah Zhong's and my boy agreed too! Nevertheless, worth a try. There's no table around so you will have to stand and eat. One of a kind experience ;) . After we finished our noodle, we stumble across the famous Hot Star Chicken Chop, 60NT for one. It is extremely huge and could feed 3 person! Unless you're hungry man. Nothing special, we ate half and threw away the other half, totally did not expect it to be that big.

Around 5pm ish the food stall will start to cook up and so we hunted down for more food.

Da Chang Bao Xiao Chang aka. Big sausage warped in small sausage

Well technically the big sausage ain't a sausage. Its glutinous rice made into sausage shape, topped up with some fillings of your choice and the tasty Taiwanese pork sausage. Look cool and its fairly filling as well, worth a try. You gotta give everything a try when you're travelling eh.

 Prince Cheese Potatoes

Combination Cheese Potato

A stall next to the sausage stall. If youre a cheese lover like my boy, you will love this. Creamy cheese over potato with toppings of your choice, yummy and sinful!

Another stall next to the potato stall, we saw a freaking long queue. Long queue means good food (generally but not always). You see long queue, being a tourist, go join the bandwagon. We joined the queue, and after half an hour, we finally get to find out what's so fancy about this stall.

Okinawa Japanese Style Char-Grilled Mochi

Tada! Japanese char-grilled mochi incoming! This is a must must try. I say again. A. Must. Try. in Ximending. Queue is long, but worth it. We went back for a second round on the next day! Forget about the traditional mochi you eat. Click on the link and read up if you do not know what mochi is ;)

The chargrilled mochi is so good, soft and chewy, topped up with your choice of sweet topping. Plum and condensed milk toppings were good, not a fan of the peanut toppings though.

Love the mochi! Ending our day with a sweet and cheap street dessert ;)
