Day 2, JiuFen & Shida Night Market

Day 2 - Monday 9th December 2013

We woke up at about 11am (mainly because of me), which is way behind of what we've planned. We slept pretty late the other night because the dramas on the TV was too interesting. We wanted to go to Jiufen, Shifen and visits a few stops along the Pingxi line but we do not have enough time so we decided to only visit Jiufen. So sad ):

We decided to go Jiufen by bus. Bus 1062 is a direct bus to Jiufen from Taipei. It stops right in front of the entrance of Jiufen, and it doesn't have time constraints, you can use your easy card (if you got one), and is cheaper (about 100NT (5SGD) for 2 ways, can't remember the exact amount).

Direction we took:
Take the blue line MRT to ZhongXiao FuXing Station (NOT ZhongXiao Dunhua Station), and exit through Exit 1. Make a U-turn (the SOGO shopping mall now should be on your right instead of left ) and walk towards the big traffic intersection. Turn left at the intersection. You DO NOT need to cross any roads or intersection. Keep walking until you see a bus stop sign with 1062 bus number on it. If you are travelling during the holidays period, there should be other tourists waiting for the bus as well ;) .

Side note: There will be a lot of taxi drivers approach you about going to Jiufen (at Exit 1 or near the bus stop). If you are travelling in a large group, perhaps you can get a deal with the driver. If not, just politely reject them and wait at the bus stop for 1062.

We grabbed a couple of taiwanese buns (12NT each) from the side shop near the MRT exit so that we don't starve ourself to death before reaching Jiufen. And seriously, the food in Taiwan is so cheap!

We got pretty lucky. The bus arrived a few minutes later ;). So we tapped our easy card and hopped onto the bus. It takes about 50 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the traffic to get to Jiufen. I think for us was about an hour.

More like a coach instead of a public bus

On the way, Shifen Waterfall road sign

Nice scenery on the way

And, we finally reached Jiufen. The bus driver will inform you when the bus reached Jiufen. You have to walk up the hills for a bit before you can see the entrance of Jiufen. If you are not sure. Just follow the tour groups. There will be ALOT of them.

Entrance to Jiufen

We were starving when we reached Jiufen. So of course the first thing we do is to find some food!

Grated peanut & ice cream warp; Famous 'Black Wild Boar' Sausage

Lady grilling the sausage

I personally find the ice cream (35NT) soso, as I'm not a fan of peanuts. The boy loves it though. On the other side, the sausage was delicious! 40NT for one and 100NT for 3. Cheap and worth trying.

Sophicsa; Chocolates that come in females sanity pads packaging

Sophicsa is a interesting little shop located along the main street of Jiufen. It sells cute little fancy candies and chocolate that come in all sort of shape and things like pads and condoms. Cheeky :| .

They do have branches in Singapore as well. You can check them out on their facebook page.

Doggie with winter coat on; Condom world

Taiwanese love pets. Especially small dogs. You can see them everywhere, shops, streets, houses. And I think they are quite open (in terms of mentality I guess.. ) as well. There one condom world, that sells fancy adults toys located at the end of the main street of Jiufen. Do go in and have a look :) , apparently their condoms enhances your sexy experiences with your partner. Hehe.

We spent around 4 hours walking around Jiufen.

 Jiufen side streets

 Over the hill

 Kitteh

We passed by this house with about 5 or 6 cats sleeping at the door side. There's a little table. On top of the table, there's a tin for coins, couple of cats sitting on the kitty snacks and a paper written: Throw 10NT into the tin and feel free to grab a bag of kitty snack from the box and feed the cats. Yes. I can read chinese, traditional chinese characters too.

We fed the cats. I love cats. I have a kitty at home too <3. I think the cats are well trained to sit on the box to prevent people stealing the snack without donating 10NT. The moment my boyfriend took out the coin pouch trying to find a 10NT coin, the cats woke up immediately and left the snack box. So we took a bag of kitty food after putting 10NT in the tin and fill up the bowl. Fun little thing to do in Jiufen ;).

 More kitteh. nom nom.

 Oldest Cinema

According to a Japanese tour guide, this cinema in Jiufen is the oldest cinema. Yes. I do understand some Japanese too. It is now a museum without any entry fee.

 Antique bubble tea painting?

Food. More food.

We stop by a shop and had some 'proper' meal to eat because someone is complaining instead of just snacking our way out. I have no idea what this called in english. The red colouring of the food comes from chinese red wine. It is believes to help with blood circulation. Pretty tasty. Love the taste.

Fish ball soup; shop front

Candy; Cheese sticks

The candy (25NT) is a bit tasteless. Expected it to be sweeter. It looks orange because its plum flavoured. The cheese stick was tasty. 1 for 40NT and 3 for 100NT. Worth trying.

Our Jiufen trip ends here. We then took the same bus, 1062 back to Taipei. The bus stop to go back to Taipei located further up the hill. Turn right when you exit Jiufen Old Street, and the bus stop will be on the other side of the road.

We visited the Shida Night market once we reach Taipei. We took the red line and got down at Taipower Station. Exit through Exit 3 and turn right around the corner keep walking until you see stalls and people walking around. Just ask around if you're not sure. You do not need to cross any intersection.

We went on a food hunt when we reached Shida night market.

Omelette shop (sales girl taking take away order over the phone) and Ham cheese omelette

We stopped by this omelette shop and decided to give this a try because we saw the queue. The signboard says the omelette were freshly made. We ordered the combination omelette with both ham and cheese (45NT) and waited for quite a while, about 20 minutes, before we got our omelette. Its good.

Menu (from the top): Original omelette 25NT, Cheese omelette 35NT, Ham omelette 35NT, Combination omelette (ham and cheese) 45NT, Cauliflower omelette 40NT, Corn omelette 40NT, Bacon omelette 40NT, add cheese for 10NT, Red tea 15NT, Milk tea 20NT.

Next stop we visited the pineapple bun shop just around the corner. (No. the pineapple bun does not have pineapple in there.) It has a long queue as well. We ordered a bun with cheese. My boy is a cheese mania, I on the other side do not like cheese at all. But, being a good girlfriend, I gave in. Forgot how much it was.

Pineapple bun with cheese; Chocolate banana crepe

We visited the famous crepe shop we know from the net and got a chocolate banana crepe (55NT). Don't quite like it x: more chocolate would be good.

I think there's nothing much to see in Shida night market. There's a lot of clothing shops selling trendy japanese or korean style clothing. Didn't get anything from there.

It was still quite early to call the day after we finish walking Shida night market. So we decided to be adventurous and try to find the famous bubble tea stop near Gong guan MRT Station (next of Taipower Station).

The bubble shop it called 陈三鼎 (Chen San Ding). Their brown sugar fresh milk bubble tea is known to be superb but we did not have the luck to try it. It was closed on Monday D: . So sad. But we manage to ease our my disappointment with 50岚 (Wu Shi Lan, another bubble tea shop). 50岚 is also known as KOI in Singapore. I'm a KOI loyal fan!! Caramel and hazelnut milk tea of theirs are the best. Of course, they are cheaper in Taiwan, about 35NT (1.5SGD) for a milk tea. KOI's cheap milk tea! Couldn't ask for anymore!

50岚 / KOI

After getting my our milk tea, we stumble across the Waterpark. Check out the website to know more about it.

Waterpark; Blue heart shape neon light

With our starving (again) stomach, we were hoping to find somewhere to have a proper dinner since we did not have a proper lunch. We came across this steak house at the Waterpark but it is expensive. So we continued the hunt. We saw this place, 金鸡园 (Jin Ji Yuan), and I remember reading on the net about they having good dumplings (can compete with Din Tai Fung).  We settle down within and order a few dishes. You need to grab the ordering form from the counter before sitting down. When you're done with ordering just leave the form beside and one of the staff will come and collect it. I think they only have chinese menu. You need to be able to read chinese or a friend that can read chinese to be able to order.

Tofu noodle soup; The menu

Pork porridge; Xiao long bao (Soup dumplings)

Prawn dumplings

330NT for 5 dishes, thats about 16SGD for 2. Super cheap and very satisfied. We were too freaking full and couldn't finish all the food. I tend to over order when I'm hungry. The xiao long bao were juicy and nice. I think I preferred this than Din Tai Fung's xiao long bao.

After the dinner we went back home and visit a local supermarket near our accommodation. We bought a huge 1L green tea yakult for 55NT (2.5SGD). Taste good with the aloe vera. Again, I swear this is the only reason le boyfriend wanted to visit Taiwan.

1L Green tea Yakult with aloe vera

This ends our day 2 ;)

Day 1, Reaching Taipei

Day 1 - Sunday 8th December 2013

There's a few things you need to do before you board the flight and head off to taiwan ;)

- Visit Taiwan Visitors Association, collect freebies.
The office have information pamphlets on places to go etc. Is a good place to visit before you get to Taiwan. They do give out freebies for tourist as well (free stuffs, who doesn't want it eh?). You need to bring a copy of the hotel confirmation, passport (not sure, but bring along just to be safe) and flight itinerary to claim the freebie. Freebies will be different from time to time. We got a couple of gift exchange vouchers that we can exchange for some souvenirs in the airport before we fly off from Taiwan. I exchanged a cute owl key chains!

Address: 30 Raffles place, #10-1 Chevron House, Singapore 048622

Take the MRT to Raffles place and follow the direction sign to Chevron House. You need to exchange your ID for an access pass before taking the lift to get to the office.

- Change your money.
Pretty self explanatory eh. There's a couple of money changer near Chevron House so you can pay a visit to the Taiwan Visitors Association to collect your freebie and change your money.

- Bring umbrella and raincoat.
Depending on when are you going to visit Taiwan, if you are going to Taiwan during December, which most people are, bring an umbrella and a raincoat. It rains pretty often during that time.

Pack your luggage, bring your passport, money (sufficient NT and some SGD), flight itinerary and you're ready to fly!

Again, before you get out of the airport, there's a couple of things to do.

- Get a Youth Travel Card (青年旅游卡)
If you are below 30 yo, you can apply for a youth travel card which gives discounts on various entrance fee to tourist spot and shopping in particular shops (more cheap fares! YAY). This is used to encourage more youths travel to Taiwan. After you collect your luggage, passed the custom, turn right and pay a visit to the information centre and tell the staff you want to apply for a youth travel card. They will give you a form to fill in. Easy process.

Travel Youth Card

- Buy a prepaid mobile sim card with unlimited 3G data
Get it. It is really helpful. Especially when your accommodation or hotel doesn't provide any wifi (but I'm pretty sure most of em do), also you can use it for GPS to get around in Taipei, great help when you get lost ;) or not get conned by dodgy cabbies. Zhong Hua Dian Xin (中华电信) is said to have a better coverage than other company. So we got a sim card from this company, 7 days unlimited data for 500 NT (S$~25). Pretty cheap for 7 days ;)

That's all for the lecturing o:

After getting the youth travel card and the sim card. We proceed to the bus terminal just below the arrival hall and took Airbus (大有巴士) to Taipei City Hall Bus Station (not Taipei Main station) cost us 145 NT (S$~7) After reaching Taipei City Hall Bus Station, we bought a couple of Easy Card from the counter.

Bus Station at the Airport, we took 1960 to City Hall Bus Station

Easy Card (悠游卡) work just like a prepaid card (touch-and-go, similar to Hong Kong's octopus card, or Singapore's Ezlink card) which you can use to pay bus fare and MRT fare, you can also use it to buy stuffs from convenience stores and some other store that accept easy card payment. You have to pay 100 NT as deposit, and whatever value you want to top it up. Once you're done with the card you can return the card back to the staff and get refund of whatever remaining value in the card and the deposit. But they do charge 20NT admin fee so you still can get back 80NT of the deposit.

After getting the Easy Card, we took the MRT to YongChun Station and walk to our accommodation for the week. We found this place from Airbnb, about $37 per night for the 2 of us. Pretty cheap and comes with free wifi too. Its 5 minutes walk to the YongChun MRT station in Taipei and 15 minutes walk to one of the famous night market in Taipei, Raohe Night Market. There's also a supermarket not far away from the MRT station.

Desk

Bed

Toilet

With our luggage and all, its actually pretty small. But hey, you're gonna spend your days outside and only sleep in during the night so who cares. The owner provides bottles of water for us daily too! Very nice of her.

But, there's always a but, I don't quite like the bed. Is too soft for me and there seems to have bed mites. I get little red itchy dots on some part of my body :/ however, my boyfriend seems to be ok with it. Maybe is just me. The room is on the 4th floor so we had to carry up our luggages up all the way to our room, not like we brought alot of stuff so that was ok. I'm pretty strong too haha.

I didn't really sleep well throughout the night. There are other people staying on the same floor and making noises during the night, switching on the lights and not switching it off (what a bastard.)  I'm a very light sleeper. Any sort of noise or light will kill my sleeps. The little windows in the toilet are actually facing the corridor. So the light will shines through the windows. Is like having a sun in your room. Can't. Sleep. The very very kind landlord actually place a mini curtain over when I raised up the problem. Very blessed to have owner who cares eh.

Enough of the ranting. Moving on.

We dropped our luggage down and went on a food hunt. We reached the airport about 6pm and reaching our room at around 8pm. So we were starving. Extremely. Hungry. Alot of shops were closed at that time and we barely make it to this sushi place called Sushi Express (I think they were closing cause they were cleaning up, but they still let us in). 30NT per plate, sashimi 60NT. Thats about 1.5SGD per plate and 3SGD for sashimi. Freaking. Cheap. and Its GOOD. Sashimi were fresh.

 Sushi Train System

Food. We I practically gobble up the food before taking any pictures. So, pictures of the plates.

We spent about 420NT (21SGD) in total, for 2 people. Worth it. and oh, free green tea too!

After that, we went to Seven Eleven and Family Mart (convenience stores  is everywhere in Taiwan) to get a couple of cup noddles and Yakult drink.

Cup Noodles and Yakult

I swear this is the main reason that my boy wants to visit Taiwan. 1L Yakult drink. Supermarket sells 2L version as well, just in case you're wondering. I used to love cup noodles, but I don't fancy them any more. Don't know why. But what's an overseas trip without cup noodles ;)

Watched a few dramas showing on the TV, and that's it for the first day in Taiwan.

Tips and advices while planning the trip

- Use Airbnb to find cheaper accommodation.
Airbnb is a website for the locals to list their own place for rent. They are usually cheaper than hotels. We got our place from here as well. Will share about the place in the next few posts.

- Use Google Map, My Places to plan.
If you have a gmail account, you can save the places on your account. If you don't have an account, create one. It will come in handy. You can list all the places you wan to go on the map and therefore plan from there. Go all the nearby places in one day instead of making the multiple trips and this helps you to estimate the distance and travelling time. You can access it during your trip as well ;)

- Do enough research.
There's a lot of blogs blogging about trips to Taipei. Read and find the places you want to go, what to eat around, what to shop etc.

- Prioritize your goal.
Think about what you wanna get out of your trip. Set a goal. Eg. Visit all the tourisy place? Sight seeing? Shopping? You can't possibly visit all the place unless you have lotsssss of time. Pick a few places you really wanna visit and spent some time there. Rushing around from places to places can be very tiring.

- Change enough money. Estimate how much you want to spent. Bring extra.
If you're travelling from Singapore, change your money in Singapore, not in the airport, but money changer in the city, as they provide better rates than airport. Google and search which is the best money changer (gives the best rate). My boy manage to get S$1 to 23NT.

If you're travelling from Malaysia, make sure you have enough money. From what I know, Taiwan, even banks, do not accept RM for currency exchange.

Deemo, Android Exclusive Songs

From what I know (reading around), these songs seems to be exclusive to android version of Deemo.
So if you are playing your Deemo on iOS (iPhones, iPads etcs) you will not get these songs.

These songs unlock by growing your tree, (measurements below is only a rough guide, I don't remember the exact metres :/ )

11.5 metres - 'Untitled2'

12.5 metres - 'Waiting by the Sea'

14 metres - 'Beyond The Stratus'

16 metres - 'Sairai'

18 metres - 'Entrance', one of my favourite song by Ice in Cytus.
Finally got it! One of the level 10 song in Deemo.

20 metres - 'Magnolia', second level 10 song in Deemo
(This song is not exclusive to Android but an ending song for Deemo)

20 metres is the maximum the tree can grows, unless we have new updates for Deemo. Therefore there's a short video complimented with a sad Japanese song, Sakura Iro no Yume. Magnolia will be unlocked after the video and credits.

Little Girl dancing around when Deemo is playing the piano

 Ending Theme, Cherry-Colored Dream

Tip on how to grow your tree faster: Playing Easy and Normal Songs with Full Combo

Playing the same song will only grow your tree by about 0.2 metres or less, and this will take forever to get to 20 metres. So try to play new songs or even all songs on easy or normal difficulty. Full combo your song will boost your tree for about half a metre (0.485 ish), which is double of what you will normally get.
